Podcasting

31 01 2008

Recently, I’ve been podcasting quite a bit (www.davidstechshow.mypodcast.com). So, I figured I needed to find some good podcasts to listen to to learn some basic structure and topics for podcasting, so here is a list I’ve compiled. Most (if not all) of these you can find on iTunes.

  • Apple Universe with Daniel Brusilovsky
  • Digital Live Now Technology Podcast with Mike Preble
  • Leo Laporte - The Tech Guy
  • tWiT with Leo Laporte
  • Windows Weekly with Paul Thurrott and Leo Laporte
  • GeekbriefTV with Cali Lewis
  • Chris Pirillo’s video podcast

So, do you have any good podcasts? Please leave a comment!

Macworld 2008

31 01 2008

And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for…my opinions on the MacWorld Keynote!
So starting out with the iPhone/iTouch (iPod Touch) updates. I think the new updates are fantastic. I’m not really going to go into detail about the updates because you can find the new features at apple.com, but I think it is ridiculous that you have to pay $20 for the iPod Touch. So, these are great updates with great feature, but I do not believe it is fair to the iPod Touch users that they have to pay the most out of all of the iPods, but they have to pay more for the new firmware.

Moving on to Apple T.V, it is a great upgrade in my opinion. I think they completely revamped the whole concept of Apple TV. It seemed like no one wanted the last generation, but they have integrated some great features in this one.

The iTunes movie rentals seem great besides the pricing. $4.00 for the highest “quality” movie? I don’t think so. I can rent a movie for way less than that. It is a great concept but it is kind of pricy.

Time Capsule is awesome! It is the Airport Extreme, integrated with a 500gb or 1tb hard drive in it that you can backup your files to. Even though the backup is over Wi-Fi, so it will be slow, this is a great concept. Now, I know that everyone is going to say “yeah, but it is over N speeds”. Well, N is still in “beta” and an N wireless card or adapter is very expensive.

The Macbook Air is so small and thin. It *looks* amazing. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for performance. Here are the specs:

  • Image

    • Intel Core 2 Duo processor
    • 2GB memory
    • 80GB 4200-rpm PATA hard drive1
    • Built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi2 and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

    $1,799.00

or

  • Image

    • Intel Core 2 Duo processor
    • 2GB memory
    • 64GB solid-state drive1
    • Built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi2 and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

    Ships: 2-3 weeks

    Free Shipping

    $3,098.00

Now, as I said, the specs are very low compared to what I believe Apple can do. I mean, a 4200-rpm drive? That’s slowwwwwww, and then 1,000 more for an SSD, that’s insane Apple!

These are all really great products and upgrades, but I just feel that these products are not up to par with Apple’s usual product releasings and upgrades.

Free Online Storage

31 01 2008

So, lately, Karl, Mike, and I have been looking for some free online file storage. We want something that is just like the plain directory and has the files in it. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find such a thing. So, we have kind of settled on MediaMax. MediaMax gives you 25gbs of storage for FREE!!! It seems like a good site, but if anyone out there has an online hosting site that has the plain interface with just the files, that you don’t need to login to use. Please, let me know! Best I.M. Client?

31 01 2008

For a long time I have used MSN messenger (now Windows Live Messenger), AIM, and Yahoo! messenger. But, recently I have really started liking Google Talk. Not only can you use the program “Google Talk”, but you can use the chat straight from the Gmail website! It is a really good I.M. client, the only thing I could say is that I wish more people used it. So spread the word about Google Talk!

Social Networks

31 01 2008

Are you on a social network? It seems just about everyone these days are. Heck, even my mom is on Twitter! I’m not talking about a social network like myspace, bebo, etc. I’m talking about social networks like Twitter, Jaiku, Pownce, and Tumblr. I only use Twitter because It has the best interface, and the most people are on the Twitter network. Although, I have also heard about some people who swear by Jaiku, Pownce, and Tumblr.

So, what are these “social networks” you may ask. Well, what happens, is that you can “tell” the people that are following you what you are doing. So, instead of people text messaging you, instant messagaing you, calling you etc., they can just go check your social network. So, let’s say you are at the store, you can text “at the store” to a certain number and it will update your social network (with Twitter at least). You can also update from the social network’s website.

I think these are very good ways to  let everyone know what you are doing. So, my advice is to go to www.twitter.com and sign up for your account to see just how cool it is! I also think it will become a way for people to be less disturbed when doing important things.
