Myspace - a music service?

25 02 2008

logodotcom.gif

Let me start off by saying that I’m a HUGE music freak. I was always under the assumption that Myspace is a social network. Well, not anymore I guess. It was recently announced that Myspace will start a music “store” of their own

Now, I’m not sure if this means they will market songs made by bands on their network for a profit, or if they are going to sell more popular, copyrighted music. I personally would like to see both. I think that putting bands that aren’t quite famous music in their “store” would be a great idea. On the other hand, they would make more profit by selling copyrighted music.

Now, I don’t know about anyone else, but I never saw this coming. I would not think Myspace would start marketing music, for the simple fact that they are in a completely different market.

It is speculated that they will sell DRM-free music, just like Amazon. Which, in my opinion will be a positive move in their direction. It will probably make them bring in some good revenue, although I’m still not too sure on the whole move to just start selling music. They may be launching a version on the web for streaming and a version for downloading music, which will be nice for people that don’t have a huge hard drive or simply just want to listen to the song and not actually have the song.

Reuters reported that they will offer this service for free. I’m not sure what the “catch” will be. Ads, or some other form of advertising I’m sure. I can handle that, but it may get a tad tiresome hearing “Go to www.godaddy.com to get your website domain!” before every song, or seeing those annoying little flash games above the music player. I’m sure there will be a catch, but only they know what it will be as of now.

When this service is released, I will definitely give it a shot and see what happens. I’m not too sure that they will make it in this industry though, but I guess we’ll just have to see.

So, what do you think?

New MacBook Pros?

25 02 2008

macbook_pro_1.jpg

It has been rumored for a while that Apple will be releasing new Macbook Pros, and tomorrow we will know! This is what AppleTell is saying:

MacBook Pro users have been waiting a long time for an update to Apple’s pro laptop lineup. Now within the last week, there are many signs pointing to new MacBook Pros Tuesday. Earlier in the month, it was rumored that Apple would be having a press event on Tuesday. It seems that that was in fact true, but Apple has decided to push it back, as the iPhone SDK, which was scheduled for the rapidly approaching end of February, was the main attraction and most likely will not be ready tomorrow.

AppleInsider reported Monday that new MacBook Pro part numbers are cropping up in both Apple and Best Buy inventories: MB402LL/A (Good), MB403LL/A (Better), and MB404LL/A (Best). They are priced starting at $1999, the same price structure as before. Just to throw a wrench in things, it seems that the part number may in fact correspond to an update to the consumer level MacBooks, another much-needed update. The part numbers indicate in stock as soon as the 29th, which leads AppleInsider to believe there will be an announcement tomorrow.

The new MacBook Pros will likely sport similar clock speeds to the current ones, but a faster chipset, a multi-touch trackpad as in the MacBook Air, and perhaps it will gain a MacBook Air-esque keyboard. Hopefully, if this is the case (and it is likely, as Apple has been making obvious moves to unify all of their keyboard layouts) they make he keys aluminum instead of black.

I think that the Macbook Pros have a much needed update ahead of them. I’m really looking forward to this update as I am looking at buying a MacBook Pro in the future.

I will blog about the update when it is officially released.

Now Apple just needs to update the Mac Mini…

Apple Promises $.99 movie rentals

23 02 2008

Now, you’re saying “no way is this possible”, well that’s what I said….

I recently saw a post on Mac Megasite stating that Apple is telling their iTunes users and Apple TV customers that they will put $.99 movie rentals in effect soon. Here is the post:

“Apple on Thursday released a minor update to iTunes and also vowed to offer Apple TV and iTunes users the treat of a low-cost movie rental each week. Available only through Apple’s automatic update feature as of press time, iTunes 7.6.1 addresses several unnamed bugs with the music software. The fix also improves compatibility between iTunes and a networked Apple TV running the version 2.0 upgrade, Apple says.

Separately, Apple has also begun informing subscribers to its e-mail newsletters that it will offer a selected movie title each week at a 99-cent price, or a third of the price of a back catalog, standard-definition title. The first title is The Hours.

The movie’s special pricing takes effect each Thursday and lasts until the following Monday, giving customers the opportunity to finish downloading and playing the movie before the weekend ends.

Personally, I haven’t tried to download a movie in iTunes, but I am looking forward to it.

[via AppleInsider]“

I believe that Apple will make much more profit and revenue off of this idea. I personally find that $4.00 movie rentals cost more than going to the nearest Blockbuster and renting a movie, even taking into consideration the money for gas. The reason Apple can do this though, is because of convenience. If you want to rent a movie, you just open up the iTunes store. I believe that that reason, and that reason alone is why Apple already has so many movies rented.

Now, when Apple releases these new rentals, I believe that their sales will go through the roof. Not only will people buy these rentals more often, more people will turn to Apple rather than some online movie rental sites, such as Netflix. The reasons why are that iTunes has ON DEMAND rentals, and Netflix takes a few days for the movie to get to you. With iTunes, you rent the movie, watch it, and it’s gone. That’s how easy it is.

So, that is why I think that the new rentals will be a great move in the right direction for Apple. I believe they will sell more movie rentals and possibly put sites like Netflix out of business.

This is a question to everyone that reads my blog. How do/would you go about Advertising (such as getting your name “out there”) and getting sponsors. I would really like to start doing some sponsorship stuff and stuff like that since I am doing a podcast, live stream, blogging etc. So, if you are reading this, post a comment saying how I should go about doing this and who I should talk to. If you do, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks everyone!
