I’ve recently been asked numerous times how I stream audio over my stream. Well, there are really four ways to do it, although the third way is just a variation to the second way.
The first way is the most basic, and cost-effective, although, it has it’s limitations. In this procedure, you connect an auxilary cable (1/8 jacks on each end) from the audio output of your computer to the audio input of your computer, and play music through the media player you use. The issue with this is that you cannot hear your microphone. There is one way to solve that issue though. You would need to buy a splitter, that connects to the audio input of your computer so you can plug your microphone.
The second way involves a hardware audio mixer. Basically, what you do is take the audio output from your computer, and put it into the mixer. Then, you take the output (usually called main out) and put it into the input of the computer. With a mixer, you can control the level (volume) of the music, and with most mixers, can plug your microphone into it. If you go this route, I’d suggest getting an XLR microphone, such as the Behringer XM8500, unless you want better quality. If you wanted a better microphone, I would highly recommend something such as the Audio Technica AT2020 or the Marshall MXL990. This will allow you to control your audio levels of the music and the microphone. This setup can get pricey, but if you are making professional productions or want your stream to be the best it can in audio quality, I would opt for this.
If you are a Mac user, read on, if not, you might as well stop here - because the last two solutions are only for the Mac. This solution includes a program called Soundflower. Basically, you need to select the audio of your program you are using to stream the music to output to Soundflower, and then select the Soundflower input on your broadcaster.
The fourth way to do this, is the most complicated in my opinion, although may be the best way to complete this task if you do not want to buy a mixer. You need two programs - Soundflower, and Audio Hijack Pro. Soundflower is free - although, Audio Hijack Pro is not. Instead of me retyping what someone has already posted, I will give you a link to the directions to do this. Click here to see this. Make sure to thank Bwana for providing us these instructions!
